Reports Surge Across North America

Data from DownDetector revealed that outage reports began to spike around 2 PM Eastern / 11 AM Pacific. At its peak, over 2,500 user reports flooded the platform, signaling a broad-scale issue affecting millions.

Although some services have resumed, users are still encountering partial functionality on Friday, May 23.

What Caused the Outage?

According to X’s engineering team, the disruption stemmed from a data center outage:

“X is aware some of our users are experiencing performance issues on the platform today. We are experiencing a data center outage and the team is actively working to remediate the issue.”

This message was shared through the platform’s official engineering account on May 22.

A new report by Wired on May 23 cited anonymous sources who claim the root cause was a fire at a data center in Hillsboro, Oregon — a facility leased by X. Emergency services were reportedly called in to handle the situation.

While X has not officially confirmed the fire, multiple industry insiders suggest it may have severely impacted backend operations, leading to the extended service disruption.

While many users report the ability to browse timelines and view posts, several features remain buggy or nonfunctional, including:

  • Direct messaging

  • Notifications

  • Sign-in/logout processes

  • Access to analytics and ad tools

Users are also reporting slow loading times and missing profile elements.

As of now, no timeline has been given for full restoration. However, X's technical team says they are “actively working” to bring everything back online. The company has urged users to be patient and avoid repeated login attempts, which may strain the system further.

This is one of the most significant outages X has faced in 2025, raising new questions about platform reliability, infrastructure risks, and communication during crises.
